Cannoli with Ricotta.
We make a variant of the classic, tube-shaped Sicilian pastry by filling it with ricotta cream.
We place a red cherry on one side and flaked nuts or chocolate hundreds and thousands on the other.
Our bakers finish off by dusting with icing sugar.
Our recipe consists of only the best ingredients.
The origins of Cannoli with Ricotta
Cannoli with Ricotta can be traced back over one thousand years to between the ninth and eleventh century.
There is no consensus over who exactly invented the Cannoli but we know they originate in Sicily.
Some historians claim Cannoli were first created in Caltanissetta during Arab rule in Sicily. Others claim Cannoli originate from Palermo and Messina.
The word Cannolo translated means ‘little tube’, which represents the shape of the pastry.
Some historians write that the Cannolo is a fertility symbol given the phallic shape of the pastry. It is claimed that a harem of women created the pastry to honour their ruler’s masculinity.
Leave the gun, take the Cannoli
The phrase ‘Leave the gun, take the cannoli’ in the Godfather is one of the most legendary movie lines and scenes in Hollywood history.
During the scene, a traitor named Paulie Gatti drives to a remote field with fellow mobsters Rocco Lampone and Peter Clemenza.
While Clemenza takes a toilet break at the side of the road, Rocco shoots Paulie dead.
As Rocco gets out of the car, Clemenza utters the immortal words: “Leave the gun, take the cannoli” – referring to the box of pastries that were on the passenger seat. Rocco leans over and takes the Cannoli as Paulie lies slumped against steering wheel.
Cannoli are a staple of Sicilian cuisine.
