Description

Mince Pies.

We make a traditional sweet pastry Christmas pie and fill it with a mixture of dried fruits and spices.

We then dust the pie on top with icing sugar.

Our recipe consists of only the best and freshest ingredients.

Who invented Mince Pies?

The origins of mince pie may date back as far as the time of Christ, or even earlier to the ancient pagan festival of Saturnalia.

Generally, most historians believe mince pies originated during the Crusades in the twelfth century. English crusader knights brought back to England various Middle Eastern ingredients such as spices and fruit. They then used these to make the pie.

Subsequently the Mince Pie became a Christian symbol and a popular Christmas food.

Mince pies were also made for the coronation of King Henry V in 1413 but the ingredients back then included meats, game and eggs.

Is there meat inside?

Our mince pies at La Rondine do not contain any meat inside.

The original mince pies hundreds of years ago actually contained mince meat and were savoury.

However, this changed in Victorian times and the modern mince pie contains no actual meat in it.

Mince pies were also not named after minced meat, as many people believe. The term ‘mince’ comes from the Latin word ‘minutus’, which translated means ‘small’.

We make our mince pies in one size.

We also make Christmas cake, traditional English Fruit Cake, which you can order via the link below.
