What does Eclair mean?

Eclair is a French word that translates to ‘lightning’ or ‘flash of lightning’.

It is unclear exactly why this name was chosen. Some claim it was because eclairs are so delicious they are eaten in a flash like lightning. Others argue that it is because of the sparkling of the frosting that resembles lightning.

French pastry chef Antonin Careme invented the pastry in the middle of the nineteenth century in Lyon in France. Careme was a pastry chef for French royalty.

The Eclair is one of the most popular and tasty pastries in the world.
